On which AI video analysis is the AI Weapon Detector based
AI video analysis is software that interprets video images in real time. Instead of passively storing recordings, the AI actively looks at each frame and recognizes what is visible – people, objects, movements, or weapons. This technology can do what human observers cannot sustain: continuously, without pause, without fatigue, 365 days a year.
Traditional video surveillance records footage so incidents can be reviewed afterward. AI video analysis is both preventive and reactive: the AI detects a situation in real time and enables an immediate response before something worse happens. Instead of searching through videos after the incident, you know immediately when something suspicious is detected.

Vaidio’s weapons detection combines two specialized AI technologies:
Deep learning algorithms:
The AI was trained on images that show weapons in a wide variety of situations, lighting conditions and contexts. As a result, it has developed a deep understanding of the typical visual characteristics of weapons.
Specialized Object Detection (S.O.)
This specialized technology goes beyond simple pattern recognition. It not only analyzes whether a firearm is present, but also:
- Whether it is pulled or held in the hand
- In what context the situation is developing
- What the movement patterns look like
As a result, false alarms are drastically reduced.
The Vaidio AI Vision Platform reduces false alarms by up to 99.9 percent compared to traditional video surveillance. That means: if the AI detects a weapon, the probability is high that it is a real threat. Concrete figures for detection accuracy depend on the specific deployment situation and are ideally very high, but never 100 percent.
Vaidio’s AI models are developed on separate, anonymized training data and continuously optimized. Your camera images are NOT used for training. Updates and new AI model versions are provided automatically in the cloud, without you having to do anything. This way you continuously benefit from the ongoing development of the technology.
In addition to weapon detection, the Vaidio AI Vision Platform offers over 21 AI modules in total and can recognize over 3,000 object classes.
Yes. For branch operations, larger companies or special applications, we can activate additional AI modules (e.g. behavior analysis, people counting). These are offered as part of our enterprise solution. Contact us for details.
How the system works
The AI Weapon Detector is a cloud-based software for AI video analysis that detects firearms and stabbing weapons in the checkout area in real time via existing or dedicated IP cameras and automatically notifies a certified 24/7 alarm center. It is offered as a subscription that includes all components: AI software, cloud operation in Switzerland, a preconfigured gateway and connection to the alarm center.
That depends on the size of your location and the areas to be monitored. In many small businesses, a single camera in the checkout area is already sufficient.
- 1 camera → kiosk, late-night sales or a small shop
- 2 cameras → gas station or a small store with an entrance area
- 3–4 cameras → larger sales floors or multiple access points
- 5 cameras → smaller branches with multiple security-relevant areas
A plug-and-play gateway supports up to five cameras per location.
Via a preconfigured gateway, the live stream from your camera is encrypted and transmitted to our Swiss cloud. There the AI analyzes the image exclusively for firearms and stabbing weapons, without identifying people, without live access by humans, without permanent storage. If the AI detects a weapon, a screenshot is sent to the alarm center within seconds. Trained personnel there review the incident and alert the police if the threat is confirmed.
The AI detection itself usually occurs in under two seconds after a weapon appears in the image. The entire process from detection to alerting the police typically takes less than a minute, depending on verification in the alarm center. That is significantly faster than any manual monitoring or traditional alerting.
The AI is specialized in detecting firearms and stabbing weapons that are visibly carried or pointed in the checkout area. These include pistols, revolvers, rifles, knives and comparable weapons. Detection is based on the visual visibility of the weapon.
We promise a significantly faster and more reliable response to visible threats, but no guarantee of complete detection. The system has technical limitations: fully concealed weapons (e.g. under clothing) are not detected, unusual or improvised weapons may evade detection, and poor lighting conditions or unfavorable camera positions can reduce accuracy. Therefore the AI Weapon Detector does not replace a comprehensive security concept, but complements it with a modern, rapid detection layer.
False alarms cannot be completely ruled out technically. However, our solution drastically reduces false alarms compared to traditional video surveillance: the AI is specifically trained on weapons and does not respond to other objects. In addition, the alarm center filters every alarm at the verification stage: trained personnel check the screenshot in real time before the police are alerted. This prevents unnecessary police deployments due to false alarms.
The AI detects, but humans decide. After an AI detection the software triggers a preliminary alarm and sends a screenshot to the alarm centre. There, trained personnel check within seconds whether it is a real threat. Only if the threat is confirmed is the police alerted. This preserves a human-in-the-loop component at the critical moment.
Yes the AI Weapon Detector is a cloud service and requires Internet.
Yes. Since the AI analysis takes place in our Swiss cloud, a stable internet connection is required. The gateway continuously transmits the live stream from your camera to the cloud. In the event of an internet outage, the analysis is paused, and the system automatically resumes operation as soon as the connection is restored.
We monitor our cloud infrastructure 24/7 for availability. In the event of technical outages, you will be notified by email. Our technical team will begin troubleshooting immediately.
No. The AI Weapon Detector is a pure plug-and-play solution. You connect the preconfigured gateway to your camera network, and the system then runs completely autonomously. You don’t have to operate anything, click anything, or monitor anything. The AI analysis runs in the background, without you having to intervene.
In Germany, in Switzerland and in Austria.
For AI video analysis, distance is much less problematic than many think. Between Berlin and Zürich there are often only a few milliseconds of latency over modern fiber-optic lines.
Hardware and cameras
You need two hardware components: the preconfigured gateway and at least one IP camera that will be connected to the gateway. If you already have a suitable IP camera, you can continue to use it. If not, we can supply one.
The gateway is a small, compact piece of hardware that is installed in your store and performs two important tasks: it connects your camera network to our Swiss cloud and transmits the live images encrypted. Without the gateway AI analysis cannot take place.
Yes. We preconfigure the gateway according to your specific requirements so that you only need to connect it.
Yes. The gateway will be delivered to you and will remain in your possession after the order. The software license associated with the gateway is tied to the contract term and will be deactivated upon termination of the contractual relationship.
Yes. We provide a functional warranty on the gateway for a period of 2 years, provided the device is used as intended. In case of defects not caused by you, we will provide free replacement during the contract period.
In the event of damage, loss or theft of the gateway during the term of the contract you are liable to the extent of the replacement value. On request we will provide you with a replacement device for a fee.
The AI Weapon Detector works with most ONVIF-compliant IP cameras. This includes cameras from manufacturers such as Axis, Hanwha, Geutebrück and many others. The requirement is that the camera supports a Full-HD video stream.
ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is an international industry standard for IP cameras. It ensures that cameras from different manufacturers can communicate with each other. An ONVIF-compliant camera is a guarantee that the camera works with professional security systems such as the AI Weapon Detector.
In most cases yes. If your cameras are ONVIF-compliant and support a Full-HD video stream, they can continue to be used.
In this case we can select and supply the appropriate hardware for you. We recommend cameras from the manufacturers Axis, Hanwha or Geutebrück, which deliver excellent quality and harmonize optimally with the AI Weapon Detector. The cameras are supplied at the current terms of the manufacturers.
Yes you can. But we do not recommend them. If you have chosen our Swiss cloud service because you value data sovereignty and do not want transfers to Chinese or US hyperscalers, using Chinese cameras would be a clear contradiction.
Hikvision and Dahua have long been suspected of including backdoors for Chinese authorities. They are on the NDAA blacklist and are not authorized for regulated industries in many countries.
In addition to data protection and compliance issues, cybersecurity risks also play an important role. Surveillance cameras are network-enabled computers with direct access to sensitive video data and corporate networks. Security vulnerabilities, insecure firmware or potential backdoors can in the worst case lead to systems being compromised, manipulated or misused for unauthorized access.
Instead, we recommend cameras from Axis (Sweden), Hanwha (South Korea) or Geutebrück (Germany). These are somewhat more expensive to purchase, but:
- NDAA-compliant and suitable for use in all industries
- Secure in terms of data protection and without documented backdoors
- Fully compatible with our Vaidio AI Vision Platform
This way your entire security system remains consistent – from the camera to the Swiss cloud.
That depends on the number of areas you need to monitor. The AI Weapon Detector supports up to 5 cameras simultaneously. Monthly subscription costs apply per camera.
Yes. You can purchase an additional, dedicated camera exclusively for AI analysis. Advantages of a dedicated camera:
- Optimal positioning specifically for weapon detection
- Independence from the existing video surveillance system
- Improved recognition quality through optimized viewing angles
- Possible higher image resolution specifically for AI analysis
This option is particularly suitable if you have an existing, older video surveillance system or want maximum detection quality.
The gateway is continuously monitored 24/7. In case of failures you will be notified by email. For hardware defects within the area of responsibility of Synaedge (Gateway) we provide a free replacement. For camera defects we contact the manufacturer and assist you with the handling.
Only the warranty and guarantee terms of the respective manufacturer apply to the cameras delivered by us. We forward warranty requests to the manufacturer and assist you with the processing. We accept no liability or warranty for customer-owned or pre-existing cameras.
Delivery times for cameras depend on the current availability and terms of the respective manufacturers. We strive to deliver promptly, but cannot commit to binding delivery dates that go beyond the information provided by the manufacturers. In the event of delivery delays, we will inform you immediately.
No. Since the AI analysis takes place in our Swiss cloud, you do not need any additional servers or special IT hardware on site. The gateway handles all tasks on site, the rest runs in the cloud.
Yes. The gateway is designed as a plug-and-play solution and can be easily connected by you or by a technician you commission. You will receive clear installation instructions and can contact our support if you have any questions. If you would like professional on-site installation, we will arrange a suitable installer for you.
No. A gateway is tied to a specific location because it is preconfigured for the network configuration at that site. For multiple locations you need a separate gateway for each. For multiple locations we will advise you on the appropriate overall concept.
Mobile App (evalink)
The evalink mobile app enables you to receive alarms in real time and to follow the handling of each incident by the alarm control center. The app is provided by evalink (Sitasys) and ES Sicherheit, our Swiss partner for alarm management.
The app handles central tasks:
- Alarm notifications: You will receive an instant push notification on your smartphone when the AI detects a threat
- Processing status: You can see which phase of processing an alarm is in (AI detection, verification, police notification)
Yes, the mobile app is fully included in the subscription. There are no additional costs for downloading, using or updating the app.
The evalink app is available for iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It can be used on smartphones and tablets.
Yes. Multiple users can be authorized per location to use the app.

We assist you with installation, configuration and technical questions during our support hours (Mon-Fri, 9-12 and 13-17 CET). Synaedge is a Swiss cloud and service provider for AI video analytics headquartered in Zurich with a German office in Lörrach. We bring almost two decades of experience in cloud and infrastructure operations. We are not a startup that has just discovered AI, but professionals who know how business-critical systems must run reliably.
No, and we will not change that either. When you contact us, you talk to real people who know our product, understand your setup, and can help you. We believe that security is too important to be answered by a chatbot. In a support case you want answers, not stock phrases from an algorithm.
During ongoing operations you will continue to have real points of contact at Synaedge. If you have questions or problems, call us or send us an email. Our support hours are Mon-Fri from 9-12 and 13-17 (CET). You will speak with someone from the team who knows your setup and can provide targeted support if needed.
Included in the free standard support are:
- Resolution of all faults that fall within our area of responsibility (Cloud, Gateway, AI-analysis)
- Telephone and written support during business hours
- Assistance with the initial functional test
For additional services (e.g. on-site visits, special configurations) we charge a transparent hourly rate of 150 CHF/EUR (excluding VAT), billed in 15-minute increments with a minimum charge of half an hour.
During business hours (Mon-Fri, 9-17 CET) we typically respond to inquiries within a few hours. For urgent technical problems, we try to respond within 1-2 hours. For simpler inquiries, the response may take a little longer because we take the time to answer them competently
Because “free” and “around the clock” together are often more marketing promises than real service. Instead of a hotline with shift workers, AI chatbots or standard scripts, we rely on qualified specialists during regular business hours (Mon-Fri, 9-12 and 13-17 CET).
Since around 64 % of employees in retail are women and the proportion of women is even higher in many checkout-related activities, it can be assumed that a significant proportion of robbery victims are statistically women. We do not want to additionally associate people in our imagery with threat or victim scenarios and have therefore consciously chosen a stylized representation in the masculine generic.
Data protection and privacy
No. Our system does not store continuous video recordings. Only in the event of an alarm is a single screenshot of the detected incident transmitted to the alarm center. The live images from your cameras are used exclusively for real-time analysis and are not stored.
No. In the event of a threat, the alarm center receives only a screenshot of the detected incident, not live access to your cameras. Your staff is not continuously monitored.
No. Our system does not use facial recognition. The AI analyzes exclusively whether weapons are visible in the image. All faces in the livestream are obscured. No identification of persons takes place.
During routine operation, people in the camera images are pixelated because the AI does not need them to detect weapons. In the event of an alarm, however, the software temporarily lifts the pixelation and sends a clear screenshot to the certified alarm center. This is necessary so that trained personnel can verify the threat: a veiled person with a weapon would not be clearly recognizable due to the pixelation, which could lead to false verifications. This approach is GDPR-compliant under the principle of data minimization with necessity-based exceptions:
- The removal of pixelation is limited to the individual alarm screenshot
- The process is fully logged (auditability)
- The screenshot will be deleted after completion of the verification in accordance with legal requirements (typically after the conclusion of any police investigations)
- Only trained alarm center personnel have access
This way, data protection remains maximal during normal operation, without impairing the security verification in an emergency.
All data is processed in a certified Tier III data center in Zürich (nLighten). We do not use US hyperscalers such as AWS, Google or Microsoft, but rather an independent Swiss cloud infrastructure. As a result, your data is subject to neither the US CLOUD Act nor foreign jurisdiction.
Tier III is an international classification for data centers with high availability and security. Specifically, this means: redundant power and cooling systems, multiple secured internet connections, physical access protection, 24/7 monitoring and a guaranteed availability of 99.98 percent. This makes the nLighten data center one of the most secure locations for mission-critical data in Switzerland and in Germany.
The transmission of your camera images from the gateway to our Swiss cloud is fully encrypted (TLS 1.3). On the route between your business and our data center no one can eavesdrop. Inside the data center the data are also encrypted (AES-256), and access to the servers is strictly regulated.
Yes, we operate a modern multi-tenant architecture. This means: multiple customers use the same GPU hardware, but each customer runs in a completely isolated container. Your data, configurations and analysis processes are technically and logically separated from those of other customers.
Yes, and this on several levels. Our architecture follows the principle “Privacy by Design”, which specifically means:
- Geographically: Data processing exclusively in Switzerland, in the Tier III data center of nLighten in Zurich, without US-hyperscalers
- Technical: multi-tenant architecture with isolated containers per customer, encrypted data transmission, no mixing of customer data
- In terms of content: No face recognition, no permanent video storage, no identification of persons, no live access by humans
With each customer we additionally conclude a data processing agreement (DPA) in accordance with the GDPR and the Swiss DPA, which is an integral part of our contractual relationship.

There are three clearly defined scenarios in which access to data is possible:
- Routine operation: No access by employees. The AI analysis is fully automated.
- Support case: During fault analysis or configuration changes at the customer’s request, authorized technical personnel may be granted temporary access. Such access is documented and limited to what is necessary.
- In the event of an alarm: Trained staff of the alarm control center receive access to the individual incident screenshot for verification.
All administrative access is fully logged and auditable.
Access to our cloud infrastructure is secured multiple times: two-factor authentication for all administrators, role-based permissions (need-to-know principle), complete audit logs of all administrative access
Alarm screenshots are processed only temporarily in the alarm center for human verification. After the incident has concluded, they are archived in accordance with the applicable legal retention periods (typically for the duration of any police investigations or insurance claims) and then deleted. No further storage is carried out.
We have a multi-layered security strategy: firewalls, intrusion detection systems, automated threat detection, regular penetration tests, well-defined incident response processes. In the event of an incident you as a customer will be informed immediately.
No. Because we rely exclusively on Swiss cloud infrastructure for the AI Weapon Detector and have no US-hyperscalers in the data flow, the US CLOUD Act does not apply. Your data is not subject to the extensive access rights of US authorities.
No. By default, customer video data is not used to train or retrain AI models. The AI models are developed on separate, anonymized training data, not on your recordings. Your camera images are used solely for the real-time detection of weapons at your location.
After termination of the contractual relationship, all your data will be removed from our infrastructure. Since no permanent video storage takes place in any case, this is limited to your configuration data, location information and any alarm screenshots that may exist from incidents that are subject to archiving. Upon request you will receive written confirmation of the data deletion.
Yes, that is possible as part of our enterprise solution. For branch operations, banks, or companies with specific regulatory requirements, we also offer the Vaidio AI Vision Platform as an on-premise installation in your own infrastructure. Please contact our team for details.
Installation and commissioning
The installation of the AI Weapon Detector is divided into four simple steps:
- Order: You complete your subscription through our website or directly with our team
- Hardware shipping: You will receive the preconfigured gateway by shipment
- Connect: You connect the gateway to your camera network, turn it on, done
Nothing more is required. The software operates autonomously in the background from this moment.
You can install the gateway yourself. It is designed as a plug-and-play solution and requires no technical knowledge. You connect the device to your internet router and your cameras, and the rest runs automatically. We include clear installation instructions and are available to answer any questions.
Not necessarily. For most applications the plug-and-play installation is sufficient. If you would like a professional installation, we can refer you to a suitable installer from our partner network.
The costs for a professional installation depend on the scope and are billed separately between you and the installer. Synaedge is not involved in this billing.
For most applications a stable internet connection with an upload bandwidth of 3-4 Mbit/s per camera is sufficient. At higher resolutions or with multiple cameras at the same time more bandwidth may be required. During the onboarding call, we check whether your connection is sufficient.
Once the gateway is connected and the connection to the cloud has been established, the function test begins: our team checks together with you whether the AI analysis is running correctly, the gateway is functioning properly and the connection to the alarm control center is working. After a successful function test the system is active.
Yes. We will schedule an appointment with you for the activation. The contract term typically begins with the activation of the system.
Alerting and Response
Every alarm is verified by a certified 24/7 alarm center. Trained personnel examine the transmitted screenshot, assess the situation and alert the police immediately if the threat is confirmed. The control center is ISO 27001 certified and operates around the clock.
False alarms are detected by the alarm control center and stop the further escalation process. A police alert is issued only for confirmed threats. Thanks to the verified procedure, we have reduced false alarms by up to 100 percent.
Yes. Via the evalink Mobile App you as the owner receive a notification about every alarm and can track the processing status in real time. Even after the incident you have access to the documentation for traceability.


What we promise, and what we do not
We cannot guarantee a police response.
We promise a significantly faster and more reliable response to visible threats. We cannot guarantee the detection of concealed or atypical weapons. When and how quickly the police are on site is also not within our control. Location, time of day and the local operational situation determine that. What we do: We reduce the time between threat detection and police notification to a minimum. This increases the chance that the police can still intervene while the incident is ongoing. In addition, AI-supported video analysis helps secure relevant video sequences at an early stage and document incidents in a traceable way for investigations, insurers and evidence preservation.
Costs and Contract
The AI Weapon Detector costs 99 CHF (or EUR) per month per camera. In addition there is a one-time setup fee of 490 CHF (or EUR), which includes the preconfigured gateway, commissioning and the functional test with the alarm control center. Prices are exclusive of VAT. If you have the installation carried out by an installer, the installation costs will be settled directly with the respective installer.
The installation costs depend on the respective installer and the complexity of your location. If you undertake the installation yourself, no additional costs will be incurred. If you hire an installation partner, they will price it individually and bill you directly.
Yes, the minimum contract term is 1 year.
After the minimum term expires, the contract is automatically extended for an indefinite period and may be terminated by either party in text form with one month’s notice to the end of a month.
Since our offer is directed exclusively at entrepreneurs (B2B) and is connected with the activation of software licenses, there is no statutory right of withdrawal.
Yes. You can add additional cameras at any time during the contract term. The monthly costs will increase accordingly.
The gateway remains in your possession after the contract ends. If the contract is terminated, the software license will be deactivated, but you may continue to keep the device itself. Reactivation is possible at any time.
For retail branches and multi-location customers
For companies with multiple branches we offer tailor-made enterprise solutions that go far beyond the standard model. Dedicated cloud or on-premise infrastructure, VMS integration, connection to internal security control centers and 24/7 SLA options, all tailored to your structure.
A dedicated Vaidio cloud server is a separate, isolated Vaidio instance that is operated exclusively for your branch network. Unlike the standard multi-tenant solution, you do not share any resources with other customers.
We install Vaidio directly in your own data center or your own server infrastructure. You thereby have full physical control over data and hardware. This variant is particularly suitable for companies with their own IT infrastructure, strict compliance requirements or the desire for maximum data sovereignty.
As part of VMS integration, we integrate the AI Weapon Detector directly into your existing system. We support the common VMS systems in the security market and determine in advance how the integration can be carried out in your specific environment.
Yes. Many large chain businesses have their own internal security control center (also “Security Operations Center” or “Filial-Leitstelle”), where trained personnel handle alarms around the clock. We can connect the AI Weapon Detector directly to your existing control center so that:
- Alarms should not go to our external alarm center, but directly to your control center
- Your own employees take over verification and escalation
- You keep full control over the reaction process
- Existing internal escalation channels and police interfaces will continue to be used
This variant is particularly interesting for companies that have already invested in their own security organization and want to expand it.
Yes. For enterprise customers, we offer comprehensive managed services in which we take over the complete technical operation of your Vaidio infrastructure. This option is available for both the dedicated cloud variant and the on-premise installation.
Yes. For enterprise customers we offer customized service level agreements:
- 24/7 availability: Technical support around the clock, even on public holidays
- Guaranteed response times: Defined response times depending on incident priority

For branches and enterprise customers we offer flexible licensing models:

- Purchase license (Perpetual License): One-time license fee for permanent use. Advantage: one-time investment, can be capitalized as CAPEX. Updates and support are billed separately as a maintenance contract.

Why do you have such a damn long FAQ page?
- First: We want you to be able to make an informed decision. A security solution is not bought on impulse, but after careful consideration. Therefore we would rather answer too many questions than too few.
- Secondly: At the same time, we want to be transparent about which technology powers the AI Weapon Detector. Because anyone who uses AI to detect security-relevant threats should know which platform the solution is based on, how the analysis works, what data protection measures are implemented and where the technical limits lie.
